In French like in English, some vowels will combine in writing to make a sound, like in A and Y in “May” / the A and I in “mai”. Letters Combine to Make Sounds Combination of vowels But sometimes, a vowel will combine with another vowel or another letter to make a different sound. ![]() The French vowels are named after their most “plain” sound. In French like in English, letter have a pronunciation of their own.įor example, the letter B in French is pronounced. So you need to think about your breathing when you speak French. The shape of your lips and the amount of air you let out is the key element to pronouncing your French vowels. They don’t drag nor modulate: your mouth is in one position when the vowel comes out, you don’t change the position of your lips or anything as the French vowel comes out.Įxample: the French “o” as in “ coco” never does the fluctuation of “toe” or even “cow” where your mouth opens and clothes on the o sound. On the contrary, it’s the A sound that stands out.Ĭontrast the French & English pronunciations : Papa (FR), Papa (English). The P doesn’t stand out like in the English word Papa. ![]() French Vowels Tend To Be Stronger Than English Vowels In other words, your lips form the consonant shape, but the air that comes out of your mouth is the vowel sound.Įxample: Papa. I like to say that consonants often “jump start” the vowels. Julie a dit : “au dodo !” – Julia said: “go to bed”! Consonants Jump Start The Vowels Tu as eu la vie que tu voulais – you had the life you wanted Natasha et Henri étudient – Natasha and Henri are studying French words often end on a vowel sound, even verbs. So strong that they really stand out in French. ![]() How To Pronounce The French Vowels? French Words Often End On A Vowel Soundįrench vowels are strong. Practice again with more words that have "r" in them. There are 6 vowels in French : A, E, I, O, U and Y (i grec). Explain to the students that the "r" sound distorts the vowel sound and can make learning how to spell the word confusing. Watch how they spell the words and then write the correct spelling on the board. To teach this, read some of the previous sample words to the students. The words bird, hair, fern, torn and burn are all r-controlled vowel words. R-controlled vowels are vowels that are next to the letter "r" in a word and you cannot hear the vowel sound in the word because of that. Write examples of these words on the whiteboard, then practice reciting and spelling the words together. Explain that vowel pairs like "oo" or "oi" make a different sound then other long vowels, so they are special. To teach this, introduce the vowel patterns in one of the words previously mentioned. In each word, the vowels do not follow the rules of short or long vowel words. Words with special vowel sounds are boy, coin, cow, book and moon. Instead, the vowels make another type of vowel sound when paired together. Special vowel sounds are words where the vowel sounds do not follow the typical patterns of long and short vowels. For extra practice, have the students make long vowel words in groups. Tell the students to point out the long vowel words and circle them. In order for a vowel to be long, it must be paired with another vowel in a word or the word must end in "e." To make sure students understand this, write some long and short vowel words on the whiteboard or in chalk outside. For example, rain, like, paint and lake are all long vowel words. A "hard" vowel sound is when a vowel says its name in a word. Long vowel sounds are "hard" sounds vowels make. ![]()
